Name For It

Why Do I Feel Guilty I Didn't Get Laid Off

Because relief and guilt arrived in the same second, and you only said one of them out loud. the name for it is survivor guilt. At work, psychologists call it layoff survivor syndrome, and it is one of the most common things nobody in the office admits to.

This week oracle cut around 3,000 jobs in India. The people who stayed had watched their inbox since 6am on 1 September, because that is when the March emails came. You got no email. you typed "phew" in the team group with a laughing emoji. Then you could not open the message from the colleague who did.

That is the shape of it. Relief first. Then a guilt with nowhere to go, because you did nothing wrong and neither did they. So it loops. Why him and not me. Was it the appraisal. Do i have to earn this now. you keep it private because saying it sounds ungrateful, and at home the only question is "sab theek hai na?"

David Noer named this in 1993, in a book called Healing The Wounds. People who keep their jobs after cuts carry guilt, anger at the company, fear of the next round, and a drop in trust nobody announces. Most of them look fine. The looking fine is the tell. The emi is safe. The sleep is not.

You do not owe your colleague this guilt. It is your nervous system registering something unfair it could not fix. It can be felt for what it is without being answered tonight.

There is a two minute game we made for a feeling you would rather not look at. It asks nothing of you.

People also ask

Is it normal to feel guilty after surviving layoffs?

Yes. a 2020 survey by the Myers-Briggs company found one in three workers felt guilty for having a job while colleagues were let go. The guilt is common. the silence around it is the part that makes it feel like yours alone.

How long does survivor guilt last after layoffs?

I do not have a clean number for you, and I would not trust anyone who does. It tends to ease once the new shape of the team settles, and to hang on when nobody explains how the cuts were decided.

What do i say to a colleague who got laid off?

Something small and specific. "I'm sorry, and I'm around" beats a perfect message you never send. The guilt is usually what stops you replying at all, and the not replying feeds the guilt.
