If you've been circling anxiety, burnout, or a general sense of off, this is where it starts. Not sure therapy is for you yet? Read do I need therapy? or the honest guide to therapy in India first.

You need a crisis to justify therapy. You need something that's affecting your life. That is a much lower bar than most people set for themselves.

most of our clients are still going to work every day. that's exactly who this is for.

Does any of this sound like you?

Tap the ones you recognise. Nothing is scored and nothing here is a diagnosis.

Recognise one or two? That is reason enough to talk to someone.

Want a slower version? Try the Traffic Light Check-in or the rest of our check-in games. Want a name for the feeling first? That is what Name For It does, every Sunday.

If you need support right now: if you're having thoughts of harming yourself or feel unable to cope, call Tele-MANAS on 14416 (free, 24 hours, government run) or the Vandrevala Foundation on 1860 266 2345 (24 hours). This page is not a substitute for that call.

What kind of therapy do we use?

CBT. REBT. DBT. ACT. Schema therapy. Narrative therapy.

None of it matters as much as this: a therapist in regular supervision, actually themselves in the room with you.

We've written about why the most popular one, CBT, doesn't work for everyone, and what supervision looks like from inside the room.

How individual therapy works at The Thought Co.

The practical bits, in the order they happen.

  • 1. The intro call

15 minutes, free, with a psychologist. What's going on, what you're hoping changes, and who on the team fits. What the call covers.

  • 2. The first session

Not a test you can fail. A conversation, 60 minutes, about what brought you here. What a first session in India looks like.

  • 3. Online or in person

Online if you want privacy, an unpredictable week, or your own space. In person at our Lower Parel studio if being in the room steadies you. We also see people in Bangalore and abroad.

  • 4. What it costs

₹1,500 to ₹8,000 a session, depending on the therapist. A sliding scale exists for people who need it. No packages, no discounts.

  • 5. Between sessions

Our journaling programs give you somewhere to put things down when you don't have the words yet.

  • 6. Is it working?

By session three your therapist tells you what they think is going on. You get to correct them. How to tell if therapy is working.

  • 7. In an Indian household

Log kya kahenge decides more than most people admit. Our therapists work in the Indian family context by default. Why we avoid talking about our parents in therapy.

Questions people ask before they start

What does individual therapy involve?

One to one sessions with a psychologist, usually weekly to begin with. They listen closely, notice the patterns you can't see from inside them, and help you understand what's driving the difficulty, not just manage the symptom on the surface.

What therapy approaches does The Thought Co. use?

Mostly CBT, REBT, DBT, ACT, schema therapy, and narrative therapy, matched to what you need. What matters more than the acronym is a therapist who is in regular supervision and present with you in session.

How much does individual therapy cost at The Thought Co.?

₹1,500 to ₹8,000 for a 60 minute session, depending on the therapist. A sliding scale is available for people who need it. The 15 minute intro call is free.

How do I know if I need therapy, or if I'm just going through a rough patch?

A rough patch tends to lift on its own within a few days. If something has been dragging on for weeks and touching your sleep, focus, or relationships, that is usually worth a conversation.

Do I need to already know what's wrong before booking?

No. "Something feels off and I don't know what to call it" is a complete reason to start.

Is online individual therapy as effective as in person?

For most concerns, yes. What matters most is the fit with your therapist, not the format of the session.

How soon will I feel a difference?

Some relief can come within the first few sessions, simply from being heard clearly. Deeper change, the kind that holds, takes longer and depends on what you're working through.

Do you also see couples?

Yes. Couples and relationship counselling is a separate service with its own page: relationship counselling in Mumbai and online.

You don't have to have the words yet

"I don't know exactly what's going on, but something needs to change" is enough to begin with. Individual therapy costs ₹1,500 to ₹8,000 for 60 minutes, and the first 15 minute intro call is free.
