How We Measure EAP Utilisation | The Thought Co.

This page states our methodology plainly. We work with 3 EAP clients today, by choice. The 50 to 83% range is measured across all three, not diluted across a large roster.

The number, unpacked

How we measure utilisation, and what it does not count.

Most EAP utilisation numbers are login counts or app downloads. Ours is contact with a psychologist. Here is exactly how we get to 50 to 83%, and what your own number could look like.

50–83%

Measured across our current EAP clients. Not a number we promise you before we have measured your team, and not diluted by clients we do not actually work well with.

Try it on your own team

What would your number look like?

Your team size
150 people

drag it and watch both numbers move

Typical EAP, ~5%
8
people actually reached out of 150
The Thought Co, 50 to 83%
75 to 125
people actually reached, at the same headline price
Why the client list is short

We turn down HR teams that want a checkbox.

Three clients today, chosen deliberately. We work with HR leaders who want their people to actually use this, and who will change how it launches if the first quarter says it is not working. Utilisation like ours does not come from a large roster. It comes from a small one we take seriously.

What you receive

A sample quarterly report.

This is close to what lands in your inbox each quarter, for a 420 person account. Toggle to see how a typical EAP's report would read by comparison.

Quarterly utilisation report
sample
Utilisation of 420 covered
Returned for a second session engagement depth
Still in active care at quarter end sustained care
2.6x
Estimated ROI, cost of care against reduced attrition and absence
4.7/5
Average client satisfaction score, self reported

no names, ever. this is the whole report.

What we track beyond usage

Measured change, not a promised cure.

Where employees consent to tracking, we follow standard screening tools such as the GAD-7 across their sessions. We report the measured change we see. We do not promise clinical outcomes, and we say that plainly rather than let a number imply more than it can.

30
Employees in sustained therapy at one client account. Real ongoing care, not one-off contact.
94%
Return for a second session once someone has started. The first session is the hard part.
2.6x
Estimated ROI against reduced attrition and absence, at the accounts we have modelled it for.
4.7/5
Average client satisfaction, self reported by employees who used the programme.
The question your employees will ask you

Who sees what. In writing.

Confidentiality fear is the top reason employees who need support never use an EAP, in the research we have seen. The architecture below is what makes the number above trustworthy.

Your employee sees

  • Their own psychologist, chosen by them
  • Full clinical confidentiality, as in any therapy
  • Exactly what their employer can and cannot see

You see

  • Aggregate utilisation, quarterly
  • Return and engagement signals
  • Cost per person actually helped

Nobody at your company ever sees

  • Who used it
  • What was discussed
  • Any individual record, ever
Straight answers

What HR heads ask about the number.

What exactly counts as utilisation?
An employee who has had at least one real contact with a psychologist in the measurement period: a session, a structured check in, or a Two Minute Door that led to booked care. Opening an app or reading an email does not count.
Is the 50 to 83% range an average across all your clients?
Yes. We work with 3 EAP clients today, and the range is measured across all three. We are deliberately selective about who we take on, so the number is not diluted by accounts that bought us as a compliance line item.
Why do you only have 3 EAP clients?
Because utilisation like ours takes real work from the HR team on the other side. We turn down companies that want a helpline to point to and nothing more. Every client we take on is one we believe will actually launch this properly.
What does the employer actually receive?
A quarterly report showing aggregate utilisation, return rate, and cost per person actually helped. No names, no session content, no individual records, ever.
Do you promise clinical outcomes?
No. We report measured change on standard screening tools such as the GAD-7 where employees consent to tracking, and we are direct about the limits of what a quarterly aggregate can show.
How is this different from the login or download numbers other EAPs report?
Logins and app downloads measure curiosity, not care. We only count contact that reached a psychologist.
