The honest version

Starting therapy, honestly.

What actually happens in therapy at The Thought Co., week by week. The first sessions are mostly history and fit. Somewhere in the early sessions it often feels worse before it feels better. Sessions are 60 minutes, ₹1,500 to ₹8,000 depending on the therapist, online across India or in person in Lower Parel, Mumbai.

slower than the films. not a straight line.

This is the short version. The long one is our honest guide to what to expect in therapy in India. Not sure you need therapy at all? Start with do I need therapy?

Progress, honestly

What progress in therapy looks like

Most people expect to feel a little better every week. Tap to see the shape it usually takes instead.

how you feel time in therapy what you expect what actually happens the dip is not failure

Some weeks you go backwards, and the line still climbs over the months. The dips are part of it working. Why change moves like this.

The chart is a sketch of a common pattern, not a dataset.

    01

The first few sessions are mostly getting to know you.

History, what brought you in, what you have tried. Not much fixing yet. We build the picture, and the relationship the work runs on.

you might leave lighter, or thinking "we just talked". both are normal. The first session
  • The early sessions
    02

It often gets worse before it gets better.

That is the work starting, not therapy failing. You begin touching the real thing. Patterns become visible and you cannot unsee them. For a while it can feel like going backwards.

the dip is the work, not a warning sign. Should I continue?
  • The middle stretch
    03

You start catching yourself while it is happening.

The loop that used to run you loosens. You notice the spiral in the moment, not a week later. Small, unshowy shifts that add up.

Therapy is not forever. You decide when you are done.

You and your therapist talk about ending. Some finish. Some pause and come back when life shifts. Ending well is part of the work.

While we are being honest

Therapy is

  • not advice
  • not someone agreeing with you
  • not a straight line
  • not forever

It is a room where you say the true thing, and someone helps you make sense of it.

We wrote about why therapy won't fix you, and why that is the point.

Quick questions

Everything else you might be wondering before starting therapy

Answer first, detail after.

Before you start

I am nervous. Is that normal?

Yes, almost everyone is. You do not need to arrive calm or organised. You just need to arrive.

What if I do not know what to say?

Common. Start with what made you book. Your therapist will help you find the thread, and silence is allowed too.

Do I need a diagnosis or referral?

No. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or a reason serious enough. Wanting to feel better is reason enough.

Will I have to explain my background?

You will tell us your history, because therapy needs it. But not the culture it happened in. We already understand the household you are describing. Here is why culture matters in therapy.

I tried therapy before and it did not work.

Often that was the fit or format, not you. Tell us what did not work last time. It helps us match you better. If a therapist put you off therapy, read this first.

The first sessions

What happens on the first call?

A short intro call, free, nothing to prepare. Its job is to match you to the right therapist. No pressure to book after. The 15 minute call, explained.

What does a session look like?

A conversation, not a couch and not an interrogation. You talk, your therapist listens for what you are not saying.

How long, and how often?

Each session is 60 minutes. Weekly is the usual starting rhythm, and you set it with your therapist.

What if I cry, or do not cry?

Both are normal. There is no correct way to feel in the room.

As it goes on

How many sessions will I need?

No set number. Many feel a shift within the first several. How long you stay is decided with your therapist as you go.

Is it normal to feel worse after?

Yes, especially in the middle stretch. Difficult material stirs things up before it settles. If a session leaves you shaken, tell your therapist.

What if I am holding something back?

Most people are, for a while. The room is built for the thing you have not said yet. Too ashamed to tell your therapist the whole truth is for exactly that.

Can I stop and come back?

Yes. Many pause and return when life shifts. Coming back is not starting over.

What if the fit is wrong?

You can switch. It is not awkward and it is not a failure. How to find the right fit.

Money and logistics

How much does it cost?

Sessions run from ₹1,500 to ₹8,000 depending on which therapist you see. The fee reflects experience, not a better outcome. Sliding scale slots exist for people who need them.

Online or in person?

Both. In person in Lower Parel, Mumbai, and online across India and beyond.

Is it confidential?

What you say stays between you and your therapist. They will explain how it works, and its limits, at the start. Our confidentiality note.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Our therapists are psychologists, not psychiatrists. If medication might help, we point you to a good one.

Still deciding

You do not have to be ready.

The first step is a short call, not a session. You work with one of our psychologists, matched to you.

the first call is 15 minutes and free.
